Fox News Run by Scientologist Leader

What would you say if you found out that a major source of American news is run by a cult leader?

Roger Ailes, CEO of Fox Television Stations, is an OT VIII Scientologist (the highest member level attainable).

FBI Pushing For Legalized Internet Surveillance, Manditory ISP Backdoors

The FBI has drafted legislation that will legalize internet surveillance and require manufacturers of routers to build in backdoors for eavesdropping. The legislation is to be introduced by Republican Senator Mike DeWine.

Bush Shown Lying on Video About 9/11

In this video George Bush is shown lying about his experience during September 11th, only 3 months after it happened.

Bush claims to have "watched the first plane hit World Trade Center 1 on television just before he went into the classroom". This is clearly false. Footage of the first plane hitting wasn't shown on television until the next day. As The Screaming Ant, explains:

Bush (Again) Caught Keeping Secrets From Congress: Rebuked By Intelligence Committee Chairman

The Bush administration has been keeping a major intelligence operation, and several lesser programs, secret from Congress. The administration is, by law, required to inform the House of Representatives Intelligence Committee on intelligence activity. Representative Pete Hoekstra, the committee's chairman, had sent President Bush a letter in May reminding him of this legal obligation.

Information about Bush's new secret programs was leaked by a whistleblower. Hoekstra, generally a supporter of Bush, said that the secrecy is a "violation of the law, and, just as importantly, a direct affront to me and the members of this committee who have so ardently supported efforts to collect information on our enenmies".

From Design to Belief: Realizing the "Counter Intuitive"

The slogan of Integrated Consultants, Inc. is "design to reality". One service they offer is the generation of animation to reenforce official government/corporate narratives when "a particular incident has a counter intuitive outcome".

As a demonstration they have posted a video online, which seeks to corraborate the official narrative of the 9/11 Pentagon strike. The video rehashes widely available materials, but offers no commentary on obvious questions such as why the Pentagon, headquarters of the military efforts of the world's only superpower, had no video surveillance directed from the building. The only released video recording wasn't from the building and doesn't show what hit the Pentagon.

Bush Transportation Secretary Resigns: Had Revealed Cheney's 9/11 Role

Bush Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta resigned on June 23, 2006, the day after his 9/11 Commission testimony had been referred to by a guest on FOX News' "Hannity & Colmes" program.

Norman Mineta had testified nearly three years before, during the second public hearings of the commission. His testimony revealed that Vice President Dick Cheney had allowed Flight 77 to hit the Pentagon:
Mineta: "During the time that the airplane was coming into the Pentagon, there was a young man who would come in and say to the Vice President...the plane is 50 miles out...the plane is 30 miles out....and when it got down to the plane is 10 miles out, the young man also said to the vice president "do the orders still stand?" And the Vice President turned and whipped his neck around and said "Of course the orders still stand, have you heard anything to the contrary!??"

The Raising Canes Club: A Fight Club for Seniors

"Grey on Top, with FIRE in the Heart?" asks Ted Truscott on his website,, as if in challenge.

He is a man with over 30 years of martial arts experience, a man who maintains that, if you can play tennis or if you can dance, you too can learn the use of the cane for self defence.

Ted is the founder of The Raising Canes Club, a club for seniors which offers training in a "legal and 'invisible' weapon". Those who pass the tests of this club learn "how to hit with power" and "the strikes with various parts of the cane".
In Truscott's well-known essay "The Fighting Cane", he explains the strategic advantage of relying on "the invisible weapon":

1984 Realized: Bush Executive Order Will Bypass Media With Orwellian Broadcast System

President Bush has issued an Executive Order which will allow him to utilize public and private communication infrastructure to directly communicate his ideas to America.

Malcolm interviews Mike about the proposed EAS

The order creates the Emergency Alert System (EAS) which will replace existing alert systems, allowing the administration to "ensure that under all conditions the President can communicate with the American people". Mention of the existing "Emergency Broadcast System" will be replaced with the new term "Emergency Alert System".

What this means is that George Bush, like "Big Brother" in Orwell's 1984, will be able to bypass media criticism to push forward his agenda.

Right-Wing Blogger Suggests Readers "Track Down" NYT Reporters, Gets Tracked Down Himself in Blog Comments

George Bush's support base has been energized by the administration's recent threats to level treason charges against the New York Times for daring to report on more secret government surveillance.

Bush's base is now looking for any excuse to direct venom at the Times. After a recent fluff piece mentioned the widely known locations of Rumsfeld and Cheney's vacation homes, one enterprising right-wing blogger spun the piece as more "treason". The blogger, calling himself Dennis K (screen capture backup here), suggested that the New York Time's reporters and editors be "tracked down":
Let's start with the following New York Times reporters and editors: Arthur "Pinch" Sulzberger Jr. , Bill Keller, Eric Lichtblau, and James Risen.

US Supreme Court Rules Secret Guantanamo Bay Trials Illegal

The US Supreme Court ruled in favour of a Guantanamo detainee who is fighting to have an open trial. Under the Bush administration, secret military tribunals, which violate the Geneva Contentions, have been used to avoid open court.

BBC News has a good analysis of the differences between military tribunals and open court:
* Convictions in civilian courts must be unanimous, while the military tribunals proposed by Mr Bush would be able to convict by a two-thirds majority

* Different rules of evidence apply, with lower standards for admission in military tribunals

* Defendants are not guaranteed the right to appeal against convictions in military tribunals

* Civilian trials must be open to the public, while military tribunals can be held in secret.
